Childcare Support During Virtual Learning

新皇冠体育盘口As a district, we understand a crucial concern for many families: How are working parents supposed to provide support to their children during a virtual learning period?

MNPS is Education and More

While we may not have all the answers, we do aim to serve as a resource to help parents in our district navigate this challenging time. We recognize the public education system is not just a way for our children to develop their minds. MNPS also serves as a safe place for students who are under the care and supervision of qualified educators while their parents are working to support their families.

Family Support Affects Learning

Evidence shows the virtual learning experience is most effective when family plays an integral role.  Ideally, students will engage in a richer, more focused learning experience if their parents have support and access to basic needs. Therefore, here are some answers to questions parents may have during this time, along with resources for addressing their concerns.

Q:  How can I find affordable childcare for my young children if I must return to my place of business to perform job duties?

A: We understand many parents in our district must return to their place of business, which is complicated as MNPS launches virtual learning at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. If you are having trouble searching for childcare, MNPS has compiled a childcare provider spreadsheet and PDF as a resource. (Please note, the list is not an endorsement, and families are encouraged to do their research on licensed facilities. A list of licensed child care providers by county can be found on the .)

Also, the state’s  provides childcare at no cost to help support so they can stay on the job during the COVID-19 pandemic. Families can access this benefit through mid-August at childcare programs that are licensed by the Department of Human Services or regulated by the Department of Education and are participating in the Child Care Certificate Program.  The program makes payments directly to the childcare provider. Some members of the Davidson County Legislative Delegation are urging Governor Bill Lee and the Department of Human Services to extend the essential worker program beyond mid-August.

新皇冠体育盘口MNPS has invited childcare programs to convene and participate in professional development, affording them better skills to assist your child in a remote learning environment.

Q:  Is there an alternative to a traditional childcare facility?

A:新皇冠体育盘口 There are alternatives to traditional childcare organizations, such as . Co-ops give parents a more flexible approach to childcare and even offer ways to swap childcare in lieu of paying tuition. Another draw to co-ops is that your child will not be in a facility with dozens of other children, which is something that concerns parents amid the pandemic.

新皇冠体育盘口If you cannot locate a babysitting co-op in your area, consider talking with parents you trust about starting your own group. Remember, many parents are experiencing the same struggles as you.

Q:  Does your student need a laptop or internet hotspot?

A:新皇冠体育盘口 MNPS aims to make sure all students who need a computer and/or internet access receive it. For the start of the 2020-21 school year, laptops and hotspots will be handed out at schools to families who are in need. Your school will let you know the dates and times to pick up equipment before school starts.

Q:  I am not a teacher. How can I effectively support my children as they learn remotely?

A: MNPS does not expect parents will feel confident in teaching their children the subjects they will be learning as they engage in virtual learning. However, we do hope parents will be ready to encourage their children with verbal motivation and praise and support them where they can. Your attitude toward their learning — whether virtually or in person — has a profound effect on your child. MNPS also collaborates with  to provide support and resources to students and parents.
