Digital Tools and Virtual Learning Systems
新皇冠体育盘口As Metro Schools prepares to begin the school year online, here is important information about the tools and resources our students will be using.
Schoology and Flipgrid
新皇冠体育盘口Schoology is the platform we’ll use across all of our schools for grades K-12 to support virtual learning for our students, while Pre-K students will use Flipgrid, which is a simpler tool for the youngest children and can be accessed via cell phone devices.
Schoology works on most any laptop or tablet device and will be the place where students engage with lesson modules; receive assignments, tests, grades, and feedback, and have robust discussions. In this way, Schoology will serve as the virtual classroom and platform for instruction and communication.
新皇冠体育盘口Parents and guardians will have an even greater insight and visibility into student’s classroom activities and learning progress than they normally would. Families will be able to monitor assignment progress and see teacher feedback, discussions, and pretty much everything that the student would see when they interact with the program.
It has been a goal of the district to move more students and teachers onto the Schoology platform during normal times for some of those very reasons. While we will someday get back to a more comfortable and familiar setting, we still want to make sure we are advancing as a district in how we use technology to support academic progress and parental involvement.

Florida Virtual School
Because of the unique challenges posed by moving all students to a virtual school platform to start the school year, it was important that we make the process as easy and seamless as possible for teachers.
新皇冠体育盘口This is why we are purchasing and adapting a proven virtual learning curriculum from the Florida Virtual School to create a consistent and reliable learning environment across all our schools.
Why are we partnering with a company based in Florida? They have been producing rigorous curriculum and modules and have expertise in the online learning environment. We have also used them for 10 years to support our MNPS Virtual School, which enrolls students from grades 6-12 and has been successfully preparing them for college for many years.
新皇冠体育盘口Just to be clear: The district is partnering with the Florida Virtual School to receive lessons and curriculum that can be adapted by our district or our teachers to meet the unique needs of our schools while also addressing Tennessee state standards. Students still will be enrolled at their local school and will be learning from their school’s teachers.
Prioritizing Technology Needs
新皇冠体育盘口What about devices? Based on surveys of parents conducted by teachers and staff last year, we know many of our students already have devices of their own that can be used as we start school on August 4th.
新皇冠体育盘口By the end of the 2020-21 school year, we will have a district-purchased device for every student. However, those newly purchased devices won’t be here by the start of the school year, and we will have to prepare all of our computer devices throughout our schools to loan to students who need them.
So, if you have an internet-capable laptop or tablet, please continue to use that until more supplies come in and we can provide them to all students.
If you need internet access, we will have Wi-Fi hotspots for families who need them, but if you already have internet in your home, that should work perfectly for this virtual learning program.
新皇冠体育盘口Schools will be working with district staff to develop distribution plans for laptops and hotspots for students who need them. Stay tuned in the coming week for more information about dates and times to pick up equipment before school starts.
