新皇冠体育盘口Nashville is a community rich with diversity and we are lucky to have students from more than 130 countries enrolled in our schools. The district is currently home to more than 14,000 active English learners.
新皇冠体育盘口Integrating into a new country can be very difficult for students and families and, coupled with language barriers, the transition can be emotionally draining and difficult. That’s why the Office of English Learners (EL), a leading EL program in the United States, is committed to designing an EL program that promotes cross-cultural education, facilitates emotional growth and protects the cultural identity of our students.

MNPS is committed to supporting all English learners throughout their journey to English fluency, regardless of their starting level of English comprehension. Our EL teachers, 750 in total, work with students to provide English learner services every day during school hours.
A typical day in the classroom could look like:
Small group instruction with English learner services
Strategic language instruction in reading, writing, listening and speaking teacher for language development

HOW TO REGISTER
If English is not the first language for you and your family, your child should be enrolled in our English Learners Program.
In Person: You can register in person beginning July 6, 2020 by making an appointment. Call 615-259-8608 or email ELreg@keepgraphica.com for a registration appointment. We are not able to take any walk-ins.
Call or Email: If a language other than English is spoken at home, and you need a translator call 615-259-8608 for an appointment.
Important: To keep us all safe from COVID-19, masks must be worn in our offices and we ask that only one guardian per family come to our office to register students.
Once your child has been registered for the EL program, your entire family will be eligible to participate in the wide variety of programs we offer to EL families新皇冠体育盘口. If you have any questions, you can read our Frequently Asked Questions below, or call us directly at the number listed above.

Student’s proof of birth (birth certificate, I-94, passport, visa)
Immunization record on TN Format.
Student’s current physical examination performed in the U.S. that is less than a (1) year old.
Proof of residence in parent/guardian name, dated within the past 30 days (Utility bill or lease agreement, mortgage statement, etc.)
One parent / legal guardian must be present with picture ID.
新皇冠体育盘口Information regarding previous Special Education services, if applicable.
School transcripts if available.
What to Expect
Plan to be in the office for an 1-1.5 hours (per student) to complete the testing and registration process. In special cases the process may take longer so, plan your schedule accordingly. The reception area is small and needs to be quiet for testing. Please limit the number of family members you bring to the appointment.
Staff will make copies of necessary documents for school.
新皇冠体育盘口Staff will interview the parent(s) regarding the student’s previous education.
新皇冠体育盘口Your child will be given an English proficiency test in writing, reading, speaking, and comprehension.
If necessary, you will be offered English Learner Services for your child.
You will be given information about the school to which your child will be assigned based on the family’s address.
Where to Register
The registration and assessment process for Non-English Language Background (NELB) families takes place in one of our International Student Registration and Assessment Center (ISRAC) or at the EL Office.
Home Language Survey
To determine the eligibility of EL services, Federal Law requires that the parent or legal guardian of the student complete a Home Language Survey (Arabic, Burmese, English, Kurdish, Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese). A parent/guardian must complete an HLS when the student first enters MNPS. The form must be completed in its entirety, signed and dated. If the first three questions of the HLS indicate the student speaks another language or that another language is spoken at home, the parent/ guardian should make an appointment with the International Student Registration Center at the EL Office by calling (615) 259-8608. Then, based on the information provided in this survey it will be determined if the student needs to be assessed for English language proficiency.

The American legal system can complicated. Once a month, we offer families legal counsel with experienced attorneys for all non-criminal issues, at no cost to families.

When: 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., 3rd Saturday of every month
Our EL office provides a notary service for all EL families, free of charge, for school-related purposes.
Our parent ambassador program partners EL parents who are new to Nashville with other parents who have experience with MNPS and who speak the same language. Parent Ambassadors act as guides, advocates and friends to the families they are partnered with as they go through the process of integration.
